The Σ− mean squared charge radius has been measured in the space-like Q range 0.035–0.105 GeV/c by elastic scattering of a Σ− beam off atomic electrons. The measurement was performed with the SELEX (E781) spectrometer using the Fermilab hyperon beam at a mean energy of 610 GeV/c. We obtain 〈r2 ch〉Σ− = (0.61 ± 0.12 (stat.) ± 0.09 (syst.)) fm. The proton and π− charge radii were measured as well ...

The creation of massless scalar particles from the quantum vacuum by spherical shell with time varying radius is studied. In the general case of motion the equations are derived for the instantaneous basis expansion coefficients. The examples are considered when the mean number of particles can be explicitly evaluated in the adiabatic approximation.

Based on the bound state description of muon and general relativistic covariant quantum field theory, we illustrate with a simple composite model that the observed deviation of (g − 2)μ can be a demonstration of the substructure of muon and give a constraint on the radius of muon in a light constituent model or the masses of constituents in a heavy constituent model.

Pion loop fluctuations of the constituent u and d quarks are shown to give only a minute contribution to the intrinsic charge radius of the neutron, under the assumption that the pion-quark coupling constant has its conventional value, with a cut–off scale of the order of 1.0 GeV. The contribution from the pion loops to the anomalous magnetic moment of the neutron represents a small (∼ 12-14%) ...

Challenges in Nuclear Structure Theory

The goal of nuclear structure theory is to build a comprehensive microscopic framework in which properties of nuclei and extended nuclear matter, and nuclear reactions and decays can all be consistently described. Due to novel theoretical concepts, breakthroughs in the experimentation with rare isotopes, increased exchange of ideas across different research areas, and the progress in computer t...
